brier [ˈbraɪǝ], Celtic [ˈkeltɪk, ˈseltɪk] deficient [dɪˈfɪʃ(ǝ)nt], exact [ɪɡˈzækt], possess [pǝˈzes], foreign [ˈfɔrɪn]

"My practice has extended recently to the Continent," said Holmes, after a while, filling up his old brier-root pipe. "I was consulted last week by François Le Villard, who, as you probably know, has come rather to the front lately in the French detective service. He has all the Celtic power of quick intuition, but he is deficient in the wide range of exact knowledge which is essential to the higher developments of his art. The case was concerned with a will, and possessed some features of interest. I was able to refer him to two parallel cases, the one at Riga in 1857, and the other at St. Louis in 1871, which have suggested to him the true solution. Here is the letter which I had this morning acknowledging my assistance." He tossed over, as he spoke, a crumpled sheet of foreign note-paper. I glanced my eyes down it, catching a profusion of notes of admiration, with stray "magnifiques", "coup-de-maître," and "tours-de-force," all testifying to the ardent admiration of the Frenchman.

"He speaks as a pupil to his master (он говорит, как ученик с учителем)," said I.

"Oh, he rates my assistance too highly," said Sherlock Holmes, lightly (о, он слишком высоко ценит мою помощь, — сказал Шерлок Холмс, отмахиваясь; to rate — оценивать, rate — норма; размер; коэффициент; курс; lightly — слегка, чуть-чуть; несерьезно, пренебрежительно). "He has considerable gifts himself (у него самого есть значительные дарования; gift — подарок, подношение; способность, дарование). He possesses two out of the three qualities (он обладает двумя из трех качеств) necessary for the ideal detective (необходимых идеальному детективу). He has the power of observation and that of deduction (у него есть способности к наблюдению и к дедуктивному мышлению). He is only wanting in knowledge (ему только не хватает знаний; to want — желать, хотеть; нуждаться; испытывать нехватку); and that may come in time (а это может прийти со временем). He is now translating my small works into French (он теперь переводит мои небольшие труды на французский)."

"Your works (ваши труды)?"

"Oh, didn't you know?" he cried, laughing (о, разве вы не знали? — вскричал он, смеясь). "Yes, I have been guilty of several monographs (да, я являюсь виновником нескольких монографий; guilty — виновный). They are all upon technical subjects (они все посвящены специфическим вопросам; technical — технический; специальный; относящийся к определенной области знаний; subject — тема; дисциплина, предмет; сфера профессиональных интересов). Here, for example, is one 'Upon the Distinction between the Ashes of the Various Tobaccoes (вот, например, «О различии между пеплами разных сортов табака»).' In it I enumerate a hundred and forty forms of cigar-, cigarette-, and pipe-tobacco (в ней я перечисляю сто сорок сортов сигарного, сигаретного и трубочного табака; form — форма; внешний вид; вид, разновидность), with coloured plates illustrating the difference in the ash (с цветными иллюстрациями, показывающими разницу в пепле; plate — тарелка, пластинка; фотопластинка; гравюра; иллюстрация на отдельном листе). It is a point which is continually turning up in criminal trials (это вопрос, постоянно всплывающий в уголовном судопроизводстве; point — точка, момент; to turn — поворачивать/ся/; to turn up — случаться; неожиданно появляться; criminal — преступный; криминальный, уголовный; trial — испытание, проба; судебное разбирательство; суд), and which is sometimes of supreme importance as a clue (и который иногда имеет важнейшее значение в качестве улики; clue — клубок, моток; ключ к разгадке; улика). If you can say definitely, for example (если вы можете сказать определенно, например), that some murder has been done by a man who was smoking an Indian lunkah (что некоторое убийство совершено человеком, который курил индийскую сигару; lunkah — индийская сигара с обрезанными концами), it obviously narrows your field of search (это очевидно сужает круг поисков). To the trained eye there is as much difference between the black ash of a Trichinopoly (для опытного глаза есть такое же большое различие между черным пеплом трихинопольского табака; to train — тренировать/ся/, готовить/ся/; trained — обученный, подготовленный, опытный; Trichinopoly — город и прилегающая область в Индии, выращиваемый там сорт табака) and the white fluff of bird's-eye (и белым пухом «птичьего глаза»; bird's-eye — сорт табака, для изготовления которого применяют не только листья, но и стебли) as there is between a cabbage and a potato (как между капустой и картофелем)."

"You have an extraordinary genius for minutiae," I remarked (у вас особенный дар замечать мелочи: «дар к мелочам», — я заметил; genius — гений, дух; талант).

"I appreciate their importance (я ценю их важность). Here is my monograph upon the tracing of footsteps (вот моя монография об отслеживании по отпечаткам следов; to trace — набрасывать, чертить; следить, выслеживать), with some remarks upon the uses of plaster of Paris as a preserver of impresses (с некоторыми комментариями по использованию гипса для сохранения отпечатков; remark — замечание; высказывание; примечание; комментарий; plaster of Paris — гипс; to preserve — сохранять, сберегать; impress — печать, штемпель; штамп; отпечаток, след). Here, too, is a curious little work upon the influence of a trade upon the form of the hand (а вот также небольшая любопытная вещица о влиянии ремесла на форму руки), with lithotypes of the hands of slaters (с литографиями рук кровельщиков), sailors (моряков), cork-cutters (резчиков пробки), compositors (наборщиков), weavers (ткачей), and diamond-polishers (и шлифовальщиков алмазов). That is a matter of great practical interest to the scientific detective (это вопрос большого практического интереса для детектива с научным складом ума: «научного детектива»), — especially in cases of unclaimed bodies (особенно в случаях невостребованных тел), or in discovering the antecedents of criminals (или если требуется определить прежний род занятий преступников: «в определении прошлого преступников»; antecedent — прошлая жизнь, прошлое). But I weary you with my hobby (но я утомляю вас своим хобби)."

"Not at all," I answered, earnestly (нисколько, — ответил я искренне; earnest — серьезный; основательный; искренний; горячий). "It is of the greatest interest to me (это представляет огромный интерес для меня), especially since I have had the opportunity of observing your practical application of it (с тех пор особенно, когда мне выпала возможность понаблюдать за практическим применением этого; application — просьба; заявление; применение, использование). But you spoke just now of observation and deduction (но вы говорили сейчас об умении наблюдать и умении делать логические выводы: «о наблюдении и дедукции»). Surely the one to some extent implies the other (несомненно, одно в определенной степени подразумевает другое)."

"Why, hardly," he answered (да уж едва ли, — ответил он), leaning back luxuriously in his arm-chair (с наслаждением откидываясь в своем кресле; to lean — наклонять/ся/, нагибать/ся/; luxurious — богатый, пышный; luxuriously — роскошно, пышно; с наслаждением), and sending up thick blue wreaths from his pipe (и посылая к потолку: «вверх» толстые сизые кольца из трубки; wreath — венок, гирлянда; завиток, кольцо дыма). "For example, observation shows me that you have been to the Wigmore Street Post-Office this morning (например, наблюдательность подсказывает: «наблюдение показывает» мне, что вы были на почтамте на Вигмор-стрит этим утром), but deduction lets me know that when there you despatched a telegram (но умение делать выводы приводит меня к заключению: «позволяет мне узнать», что когда вы там были, вы послали телеграмму; to despatch = to dispatch — посылать; отсылать)."

"Right!" said I (верно! — сказал я). "Right on both points (верно и в том, и в другом: «в обоих пунктах»)! But I confess that I don't see how you arrived at it (но я признаюсь, что я не понимаю, как вы догадались: «пришли к этому»; to arrive — прибывать, приезжать; достигать, приходить). It was a sudden impulse upon my part (с моей стороны это был внезапный порыв; impulse — удар, толчок; порыв, побуждение), and I have mentioned it to no one (и я никому об этом не упоминал)."

"It is simplicity itself," he remarked, chuckling at my surprise (элементарно: «это сама простота», — заметил он, посмеиваясь моему удивлению; to chuckle — тихо смеяться, посмеиваться), — "so absurdly simple that an explanation is superfluous (так абсурдно просто, что и объяснять не стоит: «объяснение является избыточным»; superfluous — излишний, ненужный, избыточный); and yet it may serve to define the limits of observation and of deduction (и все же это может послужить, чтобы определить границы умения наблюдать и умения делать выводы). Observation tells me that you have a little reddish mould adhering to your instep (наблюдение говорит мне, что на ваш ботинок налипло немного красноватой земли: «что вы имеете немного красноватой земли, прилипшей к вашему подъему»; mould — плесень; рыхлая земля, гумус; to adhere — прилипать; instep — подъем ноги, ботинка). Just opposite the Seymour Street Office they have taken up the pavement and thrown up some earth (как раз напротив почтамта: «офиса» на Сеймур-стрит тротуар раскопан и забросан землей: «они сняли тротуар и понавыбрасывали земли»; to take — брать, взять; to take up — снимать, удалять; to throw — бросать) which lies in such a way that it is difficult to avoid treading in it in entering (которая лежит таким образом, что на нее трудно не наступить: «трудно избежать того, чтобы наступить на нее» при входе; way — путь; способ; образ; to avoid — избегать; to tread — идти, ступать; наступать). The earth is of this peculiar reddish tint (земля эта такого специфического красноватого оттенка) which is found, as far as I know, nowhere else in the neighbourhood (который не найти, насколько я знаю, нигде еще по соседству). So much is observation (вот что касается наблюдательности). The rest is deduction (остальное — умение делать выводы)."
