— Живо, Каспар! — рявкнул Балтазар.
Восточный Правитель распахнул заднюю дверцу с правой стороны и выпрыгнул на улицу.
— Назад, назад, исчадья ада! — завывал он, размахивая кадилом с миррой.
Солдаты Сил Хаоса взвыли от боли и ужаса и оставили своих павших. Вой, плач и крики поднимались над Мечтой, как клубы черного дыма.
— Пожалуйста, хватит! — орал Мельхиор. — Зачем весь этот шум? Вы разбудите младенца!
Потом Балтазар завел мотор, Каспар запрыгнул обратно на заднее сиденье, хлопнула дверца, и они рванули на красный свет, который, не без вмешательства Сил Хаоса, горел на всех светофорах.
Весь этот день они осаждали Мечту.
В автоклубе им сказали, что сейчас туда пробраться невозможно. Радары для контроля скорости установлены на девять миль в час. Фанатики из религиозных сект кидаются под колеса. Но в конце концов они добрались до «Яслей» сети «Хайатт» и прорвались внутрь со своими дарами, драгоценными дарами.
И там, в номере по доступной цене, они нашли Спасителя, за которым ухаживал безработный столяр-краснодеревщик, леди (которая, без сомнения, была глупа как пробка), упорно талдычившую о том, что была изнасилована Господом, а также всевозможных пастухов, мясников, управляющих зоомагазинами, продавщиц бутиков, сертифицированных бухгалтеров, разносчиков футболок, журналистов-разоблачителей, завзятых театралов, Сэмми Дэвиса-младшего[90] и человека, у которого гончая славится тем, что может поймать двух зайцев сразу.
И, входя в номер, короли с трудом протискивались сквозь толпящихся там людей. Они возложили свои дары и уставились на спящее дитя.
— Назовем его Джомо, — заявил Балтазар.
— Не будь кретином, — сказал Каспар. — С Рождеством Джомовым? Мы назовем его Лао-Дзы. Это — песня, полет, парение!
Так они проспорили какое-то время и наконец решили остановиться на Христе, ведь имя Христос сочетается с Иисус, и к тому же хорошо помещается на неоновых вывесках.
И все же, после двух тысяч лет, сомнения их не покидали. Они смотрели на спящего ребенка, который был таким же, как все дети, — этакий маленький придурковатый У. К. Филдс,[91] который запрыщавел, начав выпивать раньше положенного срока.
И Балтазар пробормотал:
— По мне так горшок с золотом ничуть не хуже.
И Каспар сказал:
— Полагаешь, после двух тысяч лет кто-нибудь наконец подаст мне стул?
И Мельхиор подытожил все их надежды и мечты о лучшем мире словами:
— Знаете, Забавно, но он совсем не похож на еврея.
