Большая часть поведения, обычно приписываемого «человеческой природе», при проверке в разных культурах оказывается вовсе не универсальным и естественным феноменом, как иногда предполагается. Культурные различия были обнаружены среди так называемых базовых потребностей: отношение матери к детям, агрессивное и воинственное поведение, стяжательство и стремление к частной собственности, сексуальное поведение. Влияние культуры очевидно и в двигательных навыках: в темпе, особенностях походки, в позах человека, когда он сидит, стоит, спит, в жестах, имеющих разное значение. Сравнительные исследования выражения эмоций в разных культурах показали различия в степени эмоционального выражения, степени контроля над эмоциями.

Психологически индивид принадлежит к каждой группе, соответственно правилам которой он себя ведет. В этом смысле каждый человек является членом огромного числа взаимно пересекающихся групп (национальной, расовой, половой, возрастной, географической, образовательной, профессиональной, религиозной, семейной и др.). Многообразие этих групп, уникальность их комбинаций, а также порождаемое ими конфликтное поведение — все это вносит свой вклад в развитие «индивидуальности» поведения каждого человека.
